Cartmel to get Exciting new Food Shop

Cartmel’s famous chef Simon Rogan is looking to open a shop in an historic Cartmel building.
Simon Rogan’s company ‘Rogell’ has submitted a planning application to turn Cartmel Priory Gatehouse Cottage into a shop. The Cavendish Street property would be just a stone’s throw away from the chef’s 2 Michelin starred restaurant, L’Enclume.
Sam Ward, the operations manager at Rogell, said that he hoped the shop would be open by October. When Sm was asked what sort of products the would sell, Sam replied, “We have talked about a few ideas and products that people associate with us and with the lifestyle of L’Enclume.”
Although Sam could not confirm what the shop would stock, he was keen to highlight that the shop would not be looking to take business away from other local traders.
“We are a part of Cartmel,” he said. “Cartmel is a wonderful village with many strings to its bow and we do not want to take business away from anyone. The products will be ones that are not currently available in the village.”
Currently owned by The National Trust, the building was granted change of use into a dwelling in 2007.
The listed cottage is on three floors and is an end of terrace property which was built as a house in approximately 1700.
On the third floor over the arch is the historically significant Gatehouse to Cartmel Priory which dates back to the 14th century.
The great room is accessed independently from the outside and is opened to the public by the National Trust. This is not included in the tenancy or the application.
Since the restaurant opened in 2002, L’Enclume has gone from strength to strength, and is now the only restaurant in the North of England to hold two Michelin stars.
The Good Food Guide has awarded the L’Enclume restaurant a perfect 10 score for the last 2 consecutive years.
