Cartmel Valley
The unspoilt medieval village of Cartmel is the oldest and most picturesque village in the South Lakes.
This old English village was built around the imposing 12th century priory. Cartmel Priory escaped destruction during the Dissolution of Henry VIII and remains one of the finest ecclesiastical buildings in England. Cartmel Priory’s 800-year-old history, splendid architecture and fascinating heritage, is steeped in culture and rich with history.

Cartmel Village Shop
The Food Lovers Village
The ancient village is home to 5 good pubs, 2 restaurants with Michelin stars and several lovely boutiques, cafés and artisan food shops.
In the last few years Cartmel has become THE place in Northern England to head for top cuisine. You can read more about the gastro delights of this wonderful village here>>>
Cartmel is a wonderful village and in many people’s opinion has more to offer than any other village in Cumbria. You’d be hard pushed to find such a beautiful small village that isn’t too busy, not at all commercialised and has so many great places to eat drink and buy wonderful local food and drink.
Walk, Hike, Stroll or Cycle
There are dozens of walks in and around Cartmel Valley with walks to suit everyone.
Choose from gentle strolls through the valley, or walk along the shores of Morecambe Bay or the Prominade at Grange-over-Sands and get your walking boots on and climb up the higher fells in the valley for stunning views across Morecambe Bay and the southern and central Lake District mountains.
The ancient Cistercian Way and Cumbrian Coastal way pass through Cartmel Valley and link up to several major walking routes in the Lake District.
You’ll also find plenty of bridleways and quiet country lanes that are perfect for cycling and mountainbiking.
Cartmel Valley
Haverthwaite to Lakeside Steam Railway
Local Attractions
Located just outside Cark in Cartmel in the south of the valley is Holker Hall, Cumbria’s premier stately house and home to Lord & Lady Cavendish. Hear you can walk around the extensive parklands and see the herds of deer, rare breed cattle and sheep, visit the stately house and gardens or relax in the Courtyard Café.
The very popular Haverthwaite to Lakeside Steam Railway is located 10 minutes’ drive north from our Cartmel Valley cottages. This wonderful, nostalgic railway runs from Haverthwaite to Lakeside at the foot Lake Windermere and connects you to the awaiting Windermere Lake Steamers. These cruise boats travel the full 10 mile length of England’s longest lake, stopping at Waterhead/Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere.
Lake District Attractions
The Lake District is the largest National Park in England and 2nd largest in the United Kingdom, however it’s quite a compact area at only 32 miles (51 km) from east to west and nearly 40 miles (64 km) from north to south. As a result, all the hundreds of ‘must visit’ Lake District attractions and sights are all easily accessible from our cottage locations.
The Lake District & Cumbria are packed full with famous award-winning attractions. To see our current ‘top 50’ choice, Click Here>>>>

Morecambe Bay from 'Howbarrow'
The Bay
Cartmel Valley is part of the ‘Lake District Peninsulas’ where the southern tip of Cumbria meets the spectacular Morecambe Bay.
Morecambe Bay remains one of the last wildernesses in England, a sand plain of over 120 square miles that changes twice each day with the ebbing tide that carves the surface into subtly different forms after each tide. It is an ever changing landscape where infinite variations of sky and cloud change the shade of the water, sand and land.
The vast expanse of sand, marshes & stunning estuaries are a great place to explore & a popular place for bird watchers too.
Cartmel Races
In May, June, July & August Cartmel Racecourse is the spectacular setting for Cartmel races, a fabulous event for all the family with party crowds, a funfair, country stalls and a typical Lake District laid back atmosphere.
The original ‘steeplechase’ course is the only racecourse in Britain actually located within a village and the rules are very relaxed. You are welcome to have a picnic, bring your dog and even bring your own booze!
You can see the racing fixtures and lots of information about Cartmel races on the racecourse website here>>>
