Hard Knott Pass and Roman Fort
Fantastic mountain pass with very steep 1 in 3 gradients (not for the faint hearted!). At the top of pass is the remote and dramatically sited Roman fort which was founded under Hadrian’s rule in the 2nd century.
This amazing Roman fort was the only Roman mountain fort in Britain. The large well-marked remains include the headquarters building, commandant’s house, bath house and virtually all of the outer fortress remains in tack today. The site of the parade ground survives beside the fort, and the road which Hardknott guarded can be traced for some distance as an earthwork.
Amazingly though, this stunning historic site remains relatively bereft of visitors and can often be enjoyed without seeing another soul. The views down the Eskdale Valley and out to sea are wonderful.
